Big Monkey: The Bold Typeface That Elevates Small Business Branding

A Fresh Look for a Bakery’s Packaging

Recently, I worked with a local bakery looking to refresh their packaging. They wanted something that would stand out on the shelf while feeling authentic and approachable. After exploring a few options, we landed on Big Monkey — a graffiti-style script font that immediately gave their brand a cool, urban edge. The bakery’s original packaging was plain and forgettable, but with Big Monkey, the labels and boxes took on a bold personality that matched the energy of their new line of artisanal cookies.

Big Monkey is a display font with oversized, rugged lettering that feels both modern and handcrafted. It’s not just a font — it’s a visual statement. The style leans into street art and urban culture, making it perfect for brands that want to feel expressive and a bit edgy without losing professionalism.

Why Typography Matters for Small Businesses

Typography is more than just choosing a pretty font. It’s about creating a consistent visual language that customers can recognize and trust. When I helped the bakery redesign their boxes, I knew Big Monkey would be ideal for their product names and logo. It’s a script amp font, which means it adds flair and movement to text, but it’s still readable enough for branding use.

Fonts like Big Monkey are best used for headlines, logos, packaging titles, and promotional graphics. Because of its bold character, it’s not ideal for long paragraphs or small print, but it shines when used for short, impactful phrases. This makes it perfect for product labels, thank-you cards, stickers, and social media graphics — all common touchpoints for small businesses trying to build brand awareness.

Putting Big Monkey to Work Across Brand Materials

We used Big Monkey across multiple customer-facing materials: the bakery’s logo, packaging labels, thank-you cards, and Instagram templates. Each time, the font added a sense of energy and confidence. For the logo, it gave the brand a youthful, creative identity. On packaging, it made each cookie box feel like a statement piece. And for social media, it helped the bakery stand out in a crowded feed without looking chaotic.

Big Monkey also worked well in print and digital formats. Whether it was a small label on a cookie bag or a large banner on the bakery’s website, the font scaled beautifully. We made sure to adjust spacing and contrast to keep it legible, especially on smaller items like stickers and thank-you tags. On mobile screens, we used it sparingly for headlines and calls to action, which helped maintain readability while still capturing attention.

Pairing Big Monkey with Supporting Fonts

One of the keys to using Big Monkey effectively is pairing it with simpler, more neutral fonts. In the bakery project, we paired it with a clean sans serif for body text and descriptions. This created a nice visual balance — the bold, expressive headlines drew the eye, while the supporting text remained easy to read and professional.

For other brands, you could pair Big Monkey with an elegant serif font for a vintage-meets-modern look, or with a minimalist script font for a more cohesive handwritten aesthetic. The key is to let Big Monkey be the star of the show while using supporting fonts to keep the overall design grounded and functional.

What to Know Before Using Big Monkey

Before using any font for business branding, it’s important to check what’s included in the font package. Big Monkey comes in multiple styles and weights, which gives you flexibility depending on your design needs. It also includes alternates and ligatures, which are great for customizing the look and feel of your text.

Make sure to verify multilingual support if your brand communicates in more than one language. Also, confirm that the font license allows for commercial use — especially if you’re printing packaging, creating merchandise, or designing templates for clients. Big Monkey is a premium font, and its licensing is well-suited for small businesses looking to build a polished, consistent brand identity.
